How to be a Subject Resource Specialist

Liaison's Role in Instruction

One role of Liaisons is to offer instruction on library resources/services for their assigned Liaison areas.  Liaison Librarians may partner to offer instruction in non-liaison areas, due to the interdisciplinary nature of research.

Liaison Librarians can introduce themselves, and mention Library Instruction by sending a Fall welcome letter.  Contacting the Department Faculty Liaison by phone, email or an in-person meeting, are other ways to establish the liaison relationship and build rapport.

Liaison Instruction Opportunities

Liaison OpportunitiesLiaison Librarians can identify opportunities for Instruction by interaction with Faculty.

Here are a few examples:

  • Course-Integrated Instruction: Review the semester course offerings list to determine which classes might afford instruction opportunities, i.e. those classes which are designated as WI (Writing Intensive Course in the Major), or those courses in which the titles specifically indicate the course requires research. The Liaison Librarian contacts the Faculty member(s) teaching these courses, to ascertain if an instruction component would be appropriate, and personally schedules the instruction session.
  • Orientations: Contact your assigned Liaison areas, and determine if new faculty/student orientations or receptions are being held at the beginning of semesters at which Library Resources and Services can be presented.
  • Take the opportunity to talk with Faculty about instruction at Liaison meetings, receptions, faculty meetings, academic presentations and other venues which Faculty attend.
  • Faculty research questions at Reference Desks (or in Virtual Reference), may also present an ideal opportunity, not only to address their specific query, but also to schedule an instruction session related to their question (i.e. database selections and search strategies).

Standard boxes like Ask-a-Librarian can be copied and reused from on the @Boxes LibGuide
  • Liaison Librarians have Camtasia®installed on their desktops. Camtasia®can be used to design videos.  Liaisons are encouraged to contact Veronica Bielat for advice and guidance in producing online tutorials, etc.  Click on this link for TechSmith Camtasia Tutorials.
