Do I need a data management plan?

Most federal funding agencies and many private funders require a data management plan (DMP) or data sharing plan as a component of grant applications. Each agency/foundation has different requirements.

Key elements to consider in a DMP:

  • What data will be collected?
  • What data formats and metadata standards will be used?
  • How will data be stored during the project and preserved after the project?
  • How will data be made available to others after the project?
  • How will privacy/confidentiality or intellectual property rights be protected?
  • Who will be responsible for data management?
