I'm a second year MLIS student, focusing primarily on archival administration. I've taken part in a lot of different projects that I've enjoyed as both a student and GSA, such as the Detroit Music Preservation Fellowship, copy cataloging a collection of art books, and creating descriptive metadata for our DTE Aerial photograph collection. I chose to highlight this oral history project because it has been my favorite project I've taken part in so far!
Detroit, and especially the Cass Corridor (what is now commonly referred to as Midtown) was once home to a thriving visual and literary arts scene, with many independent presses in operation from the 1960s through the early 2000s. Documentary filmmaker and visual artist Monika Berenyi donated to our archives a series of video interviews she conducted from 2009-2010 with many writers and poets who were a part of this literary community. They have recently been made available through our digital collections website after Daniel Cichowlas (MLIS '24) and I transcribed and edited these interviews in order to better preserve and provide public access to them.[*]-Precursory transcription work was done by SIS students in the 2012 & 2013 Digital Libraries courses led by Dr. Joan Beaudoin, but the final transcription work was completely redone by Claire Cirocco with assistance by Daniel Cichowlas.
-Cass Corridor Documentation Project transcripts completed by Oral History SIS students led by Dr. Joe Turini.
-Initial interviews were arranged and conducted/recorded by Diane Sybeldon and artist in residency Monika Berenyi.
