Completed Projects

Ukraine Reclassification (April 2024)

For over a hundred years, material about Ukraine had been classified in the Library of Congress Call Number Classification under DK508 (the classification number for: History of Russia. Soviet Union. Former Soviet Republics—Regions not limited to one Republic, A-Z). This lumps all the material about Ukraine, especially its history, under Russia. A multi-year project started at Library of Congress began in 2022 to revise the call number ranges for Ukraine material. In 2023 it was announced that the history of Ukraine would be transferred to a separate chain of call numbers (DK5001-DK5995), getting it out from under call number hierarchy that placed it under Russia.

The final list of new call numbers was released in October 2023, and can be found here.

WSULS had a small collection of material in LC classification that fall under the DK508 number and we have updated about 130 items to their new call numbers. There are a few stragglers that have been checked out or missing, but for the most part this has been completed as of April 14, 2025.

Gulf of Mexico & Mount Denali (March 2025)

In March 2025, the Library of Congress released its list of changes to its vocabulary, the Library of Congress Subject Headings (LCSH), which included changes to Geographic Place names in reaction to recent Administration Executive Orders. Despite push-back from the library community, LC cited its policy, stating "The Library of Congress defers to the United States Board of Geographic Names (BGN) for place names contained within our controlled vocabularies and classification." Despite concerns from the library community, the following changes were officially made on March 14, 2025:

  • Mexico, Gulf of was changed to: America, Gulf of
  • Denali, Mount (Alaska) was changed to: McKinley, Mount (Alaska)

In addition to several related headings that included these original terms.

The full list of changes can be found here: https://www.classweb.org/approved-subjects/2412a.html

Libraries are not required to use LCSH for their controlled vocabulary. They can use whichever controlled vocabulary from any source, even local ones, if they so desire. Many libraries will not be complying with these changes and Wayne State will not be doing so, either.

Here are enumerated the subject headings that are associated with resources held in our online catalog and the changes we've made to retain the original subject headings for: Mexico, Gulf of, and: Denali, Mount (Alaska).
