Academic & Research Focused Artificial Intelligence Tools

Considerations

Students and researchers at Wayne State University should have a commitment to honor and integrity in their learning and research.  This means affirming that all written work submitted is their own and that any text or idea they not composed on their own is properly cited. In practical terms this means:

  • Read each instructors’ policies on using AI, and follow them carefully.
  • Be prepared to follow different AI-related rules in each class
  • Submit  AI-generated writing only in those cases when the instructor has allowed it
  • Always cite and document any AI-generated writing using proper citation formats.

Beneficial Uses of AI

Some benefits of using AI tools as a student or researcher include:

  • Brainstorming and idea generation. such as suggesting ideas for research paper topics in a given area
  • Suggesting useful keywords to use when searching the libraries' databases to find information on a topic
  • Supplemental explanation on difficult or confusing concepts.  this can include asking it to explain the concept in simpler terms or to provide additional illustrative examples
  • For those where English is not their first language, they can assist with vocabulary, punctuation, and sentence structure

Reasons for Discouraging the Use of AI Tools

The use of AI tools is discouraged in the classroom for several reasons including but not limited to:

  • The text produced may include made-up information that sounds very believable. It is the responsibility of the student or researcher to verify the validity of any information provided by an AI tool using additional sources of reliable information.
  • The text produced may include gender, racial, and language biases and biases against particular viewpoints that are hard to detect.  Again it is the responsibility of the student or researcher to ensure fair representation of the topics in their research
  • The opportunity to engage in valuable writing, reading, and thinking practice which helps students and researchers develop as learners and thinkers is diminished if AI tools are used to simply “push a button” to generate text that is submit it as their own work.
  • AI tools merely assemble pre-existing (and often incorrect, biased) text.  Using them to generate research or coursework does not demonstrate the student's or researcher's ability to make choices about how to write or argue their stance for a particular purpose and to a particular audience.
