Evidence Synthesis Review Guide

A guide to performing systematic reviews and requesting assistance from a librarian.

Essential components of record management

1. De-duplication of search results. Searching multiple databases inevitably results in duplicate records, which are removed before screening.

2. Title/abstract screening. Records are independently screened for inclusion, typically by two independent reviewers, based on their title and abstract. Conflicts between reviewers are resolved by consensus or a third reviewer.

3. Full text screening. Records are independently screened for inclusion, typically by two independent reviewers, based on their full text. Conflicts between reviewers are resolved by consensus or a third reviewer.

4. PRISMA flow diagram: A PRISMA flow diagram depicts the flow of records through the screening process. It maps out the the number of records identified, included and excluded, and reasons for exclusions.
