Evaluating Information

Many assignments will ask you to find "scholarly articles," but what does that mean?

Scholarly, Popular, Trade Articles--What's the Difference?

How do I know if an article is scholarly?

Many assignments will ask you to find "scholarly articles" or "peer-reviewed" articles. How do I know if something is scholarly?

The following 2 videos will help you understand the differences between scholarly, popular, and trade publications, and how to identify a scholarly article using visual cues.

What is Peer Review?

Scholarly articles are often (but not always!) peer-reviewed. You've probably heard the term before, but this video gives a brief but thorough description of what it means.

Using Library Databases to Easily Find Scholarly and Peer-Reviewed Articles

Find it fast with a library database

Library databases have filters and tools to help you find scholarly articles quickly. The following videos demonstrate 2 ways to find scholarly articles--using Summon and using a disciplinary library database.

Request books, book chapters, articles, and more.

Request a book that's not available through WSU Libraries

You can borrow books from over 100 Michigan libraries, including the U of M and MSU, using MelCat, the Michigan Electronic Library borrowing system. Books can only be borrowed in print. It usually takes 5-7 business days for delivery. You will receive an email to your WSU email address when it is ready for you to pick-up.

Talk to a librarian using our 24x7 chat if you need assistance requesting a book through MelCat.

To get directly to MelCat, go to https://mel.org and search for your book in the MelCAT search box. Use the Get This For Me link to request your book using your Wayne State University AccessID and Password.
