In Women of Influence in Contemporary Music: Nine American Composers, Michael K. The goal in writing this book was to stimulate more comprehensive conversations about women in leadership situations (particularly secondary and tertiary education contexts) by understanding how women have gone about creating positive differences in educational environments. Frequently books about women and leadership deal with the politics of this discussion space and the statistics of women succeeding to and through the glass ceiling, or not The focus of this book is on a different space: on learning from the experiences of women doing leadership work. The research strategy underpinning the book was to listen to the voices and stories of 28 women occupying senior roles in education. Half of these women were principals of independent Victorian secondary schools and the other half were in professorial and senior leadership roles in Victorian universities. Through this listening and pondering on their experiences the authors came to recognise that these women of influence were working in contested spaces and facing multiple practice dilemmas. Readers are invited to explore these spaces and dilemmas, considering the learnings from the women whose lives, views and experiences are represented here.

Weaving narratives with gendered analysis and historiography of Mexicans in the Midwest, Mexican Women and the Other Side of Immigration examines the unique transnational community created between San Ignacio Cerro Gordo, Jalisco, and Detroit, Michigan, in the last three decades of the twentieth century, asserting that both the community of origin and the receiving community are integral to an immigrant's everyday life, though the manifestations of this are rife with contradictions. Exploring the challenges faced by this population since the inception of the Bracero Program in 1942 in constantly re-creating, adapting, accommodating, shaping, and creating new meanings of their environments, Luz Mar#65533;a Gordillo emphasizes the gender-specific aspects of these situations. While other studies of Mexican transnational identity focus on social institutions, Gordillo's work introduces the concept of transnational sexualities, particularly the social construction of working-class sexuality. Her findings indicate that many female San Ignacians shattered stereotypes, transgressing traditionally male roles while their husbands lived abroad. When the women themselves immigrated as well, these transgressions facilitated their adaptation in Detroit. Placed within the larger context of globalization, Mexican Women and the Other Side of Immigration is a timely excavation of oral histories, archival documents, and the remnants of three decades of memory.

Created Equal begins with the early suffragist movement of the late 19th century, telling of the state of women's rights as they were at the time. The reader will learn about Elizabeth Cady Stanton, Lucretia Mott, and the other women of the Seneca Falls Convention. Having helped to start the suffragist movement, women such as Susan B. Anthony and Lucy Stone fought long and hard for the rights of women. Braving the turmoil of the Civil War era, these women formed organizations such as the American Equal Rights Association and helped to push for equal rights for not only themselves, but for African Americans as well. The turn-of-the-century saw a growth in the anti-suffragist movement, and new ladies appeared on the scene ready to fight hard for their beliefs. This book investigates the convergence of feminist literary projects in the Latin American and West African contexts and demonstrates how the authors examined here employ similar writing strategies to (re)constitute feminine subjects. Their writing strives to rid literature, and thus international psyches, of reductive stereotypes of subaltern women, while projecting more complex, active female images. In portraying the horrific victimization that they and their people have experienced, these writers claim a position of authorial power and wield their tragedies, along with their words, as a weapon against imperial, patriarchal, and neocolonial tyranny. Despite their vast socioeconomic and cultural differences, these women share much common ground, where they cultivate feminine words of deliverance.

Why did so many women enter American medicine? How are women faring, professionally and personally, once they become physicians? Are women transforming the way medicine is practiced?
