Michigan Notable Book (2023). A vibrant collection of essays and poems exploring the diverse range of the Arab American experience. Hadha Baladuna ("this is our country") is the first work of creative nonfiction in the field of Arab American literature that focuses entirely on the Arab diaspora in Metro Detroit, an area with the highest concentration of Arab Americans in the US.
This collection of essays focuses on literature by and about Arab Americans; incorporating such themes as the Lebanese Civil War; Islam in America; sex, violence, and storytelling; immigration; ethnicity; and writers of North African origin. This book won an 2012 Arab American Book Award Honorable Mention for Non-Fiction.
Excellent analytical essays comprise half of this volume, along with analysis of twelve representative Arabic novels (by Mahfouz, Kanafani, Barakat, Salih, Qasim, Jabra, Ismail, al-Ghitani, Habibi, Munif, al-Shaykh, and al-Kuni).
