The QuickSearch box searches for books, articles, and other resources. Use the QuickSearch box here or on the library home page. On the results page, look for the box titled "Books and Media."

The catalog searches for books, DVDs, and other materials. Use the catalog search box here or go to the catalog page to search for books.

Search Tips

Academic libraries use Library of Congress (LC) subject headings. There are a number of LC subject headings to describe Latino/as in the U.S. The most common one is Hispanic Americans.

There are also narrower terms. For example:

  • Cuban Americans
  • Dominican Americans
  • Nicaraguan Americans
  • Mexican Americans
  • Peruvian Americans

When you search for books, you can use the terms Latino, Latina, Hispanic, Puerto Rican, or any term you can think of for your topic. The difference is that the terms Latino/Latina will be searched in the titles of works, but not in subject headings, because there are no LC subject headings that include Latino or Latina. Here is an example of a book that has Latino in the title, but notice its subject headings:

Advanced Catalog Searching

For more detailed and nuanced searching, use the catalog's advanced search screen. This allows you to search using key words, designate where you want to search for those key words, and set limits.

In this example, a search was done on Hispanic Americans as LC subject, higher education as a key word phrase (using quotation marks), and limits were set as follows: ebooks only, English language, published from 2010 to 2020.
