Library Resources for Instructional Designers

This library guide provides resources and info on library resources available for course design.

Connecting with a Subject Specialist Librarian

Subject Specialist and Liaison Librarians support the teaching and student learning needs of the Colleges, Departments, and Programs at Wayne State University. Contact Subject Librarian with questions or if you need assistance locating or curating resources for a course, synchronous or asynchronous library instruction, or student research support.

Use this message us button to talk to a librarian 24x7 - or click on Help anytime on the library homepage.

Canvas and the Libraries

Library Resources in Canvas

Each Canvas course site created for a WSU course contains a Library Resources link that sends students to the library research guide for that course or discipline.

Each School, Department, and Program at WSU has a Subject Specialist Librarian assigned. Faculty can contact the librarian to discuss the creation of a specialized guide to align with the content and goals of any research assignment. Faculty can also contact their subject specialist Librarian to arrange for in-class instruction.

You can find all of the library subject and course guides on our Research Guides page.

Library Modules in Canvas Commons

The WSU Libraries has several standard modules that can be directly integrated into Canvas course sites. These can be especially useful if an instructor has a research paper or project in their course.

Just search the tag wsuinst or wsuls in the Canvas Commons to locate our modules.

They include:

  • A general Welcome to the libraries and basic searching overview
  • Guided discussions on bias
  • Citing sources and avoiding plagiarism

Library Integration in Canvas

You can access EBSCO Host, ProQuest, and Academic Video Online collections directly through the External Links and Apps tools in Canvas course sites. This provides direct access to ebooks, ebook chapters, articles, streaming audio and video, and more.

JSTOR Hypothesis integration

Content from the library's licensed JSTOR databases can be integrated directly into the Hypothes.is app. Integrating articles into Hypothes.is directly through JSTOR assures copyright compliance.

This recorded webinar from September 2023 discusses the benefits of integrating JSTOR content into Hypothes.is and using annotation with students.
