Circulation and Borrowing

The Circulation Desk is our service point for Reserves materials, book check-out, study rooms, and interlibrary loan pick-up. Materials in the Reserves Collection are located at the Circulation Desk and are normally loaned for 3-hours. All circulating library materials may be checked out at the Circulation Desk.

A WSU OneCard (faculty, students and staff) is needed to borrow materials. The loan period for Wayne State faculty and graduate students runs until the end of the current semester. For other patrons, the loan period is 28 days. WSU participates in the MeL (Michigan eLibrary) program as well as interlibrary loan for non-WSU borrowers.

Materials may be returned to the Circulation Desk or deposited in the book drop located outside the Law Library Building’s east entrance. Books may be renewed in-person, by telephone (313-577-6181) or by clicking on “My Library Account” from the library’s web page.

Community Access Computers

There are 3 computer workstations available for public access to legal research. We ask patrons to sign the Community Access Computer Guest Log located at the Circulation Desk and show a photo ID to obtain a username and password for accessing a computer. There are time limitations on use of the library’s community access computers.

Copying and Printing

Two printer-photocopiers are located on the library’s 1st Floor around the corner from the Circulation and Reference Desks. Printing, copying and scanning functions are available. A WSU OneCard (faculty, students, staff) or WSU Guest OneCard is needed to print, copy or scan. A WSU Guest OneCard may be purchased from the One Card Machine, located outside the library entrance.

Library Seating

Carrels and tables for quiet study are available on all three floors of the library. Study rooms are reserved for Wayne Law student use only. (See Study Rooms.)

Lost and Found

Personal items found in the library are held at the Circulation Desk for a limited time. You may wish to contact WSU Public Safety to inquire about lost items at 313-577-2222.

Reference Assistance

The Arthur Neef Law Library welcomes community members, legal professionals, and non-WSU affiliates to visit our library, use library materials, and conduct legal research. All library visitors must follow Wayne State University Library System policies.

Please check the Law Library’s website for our current hours of operation.

Reference librarians are available Monday - Friday to provide legal research guidance, which means we can recommend print and online resources and show you how to use these resources to find answers to your legal research questions. During your visit, our staff can assist you with accessing legal information through books and our community access computers.

Please note: Print and online materials are only available to in-person law library visitors, because of copyright and licensing restrictions. If you cannot visit the Law Library in person, you may still contact a reference librarian by phone (313.577.6180) or by email at ask@wayne.libanswers.com for suggestions of publicly available legal information sources.

What we can do:

  • Suggest ways to research which laws are important in your situation
  • Help you find books, articles, or websites that discuss the area of the law of interest to you
  • Assist you in finding sample legal forms or litigation templates to read or copy
  • Teach you how to use WSU Library databases, legal research websites, and books to research your case
  • Recommend legal dictionaries or thesauruses to learn what legal terms mean

However, we cannot provide legal advice. Under Michigan law “legal advice” can include:

  • Explaining the definitions of legal phrases / words, case opinions, or laws
  • Determining which laws, statute, or cases apply to your situation
  • Finding relevant cases, laws, or statutes for your case
  • Helping you fill out legal forms or determining if you have filled out forms correctly

Study Rooms

The library’s 14 study rooms are reserved for the use of Wayne Law J.D., LL.M, and MSL program students only. Students may reserve a study room in person, by phone or by using the Study Room Reservation System from their personal devices. Study rooms may be reserved for up to 3 hours and reservations may be made up to 2 weeks in advance. Keys are available for check-out from the Circulation Desk.
