Guide to Interlibrary Services

If the library doesn't have it, Interlibrary Services can get it!

About ILL

Can't find an item through Wayne State or MeLCat? Submit a request for delivery to your library with ILL. Please note, physical items may take over a week for delivery.

Electronic ILL Requests

How do I get my electronic ILL item(s)?

Electronic materials requested from ILL are posted as PDFs to your account. To access, login to your ILL account and click the 'Electronically Received Articles' link on the sidebar. Notifications are also sent by email that contain a link directly to the PDF.

Physical ILL Requests

How do I get my physical ILL item(s)?

Physical materials requested from ILL can be picked up at any Wayne State University Library. You will receive an email when your item is put on the hold shelf at your default delivery location. Your default delivery location can be modified be selecting "Change User Information" once log in to your ILL account. Please note, the 'mail to address' delivery is only for Distance Education students.

  Due Dates

Loan periods begin the day the item is received by Wayne State. Borrowed items MUST be returned by the due date listed in the ILL request, or a renewal request submitted and granted. Not all renewals are granted.

Physical books are to be returned directly to one of our WSU Library system circulation desks.

Please do not return ILL materials in WSU book dropboxes.

Standard Loan Periods:

  • Books and CD/DVD/Video: Variable due dates depending upon the policy of the lending library
  • Typically 21 days

  Renewals

Standard Renewal Policy:

  • Variable rules depending upon the policy of the lending library
  • Your window to renew begins seven days before your item is due
  • Renewals are not allowed for overdue items
  • Renewals are also not available for items that have been recalled by the lending library, or by patrons who have excessive library fines or fees
  • When you request a renewal, you are immediately granted a three day extension. The time is required for staff to manually send your request, the lending institution to review the request and respond, then staff to edit your request and email you with the result.

  Overdue Items

Borrowing from other institutions is a privilege and requires that WSU maintains positive relations with partner libraries. Returning materials late (or not at all) jeopardizes relations and affects all library users.

Overdue Policy:

  • A fine of $1.00 per business day is charged for each item overdue regardless of patron type; e.g. faculty, student or staff. This fine will not be waived
  • Borrowers will be billed for replacement costs of the item if WSU receives an invoice for replacement of an unreturned item. Patron borrowing privileges are typically suspended until their account is paid in full. If invoiced for replacement, Wayne cannot accept returns or replacement copies in lieu of payment.
  • Faculty, staff or students who have been billed for overdue items more than three times and have not contact Interlibrary Loan will have their WSU ILL borrowing privileges suspended

For policy details, see our complete Overdue Policy.
