Starting your search in Summon

  • Searching for a specific food? Try copy and pasting this search string into the Summon search bar:
    • "[insert food here]" AND (manufactur* OR process OR packag* OR nutri*)
  • Where it says insert food here, you'll want to put your own food in that spot! For example:
    • "fish sticks" AND (manufactur* OR process OR packag* OR nutri*)
  • You might also realize there aren't a ton of articles about your specific food, so you might want to make it more broad.
    • For example if you're working on a project about cheetos, you could try "Frito-lay" or "corn snacks" instead of cheetos to broaden your search.
    • "Frito-lay" AND (manufactur* OR process OR packag* OR nutri*)
  • To limit your results to scholarly & peer-reviewed articles, look for the filters along the left side of the page and check that box.
  • Remember: sometimes you need to check in multiple spots to get all of the information you need :) it can be frustrating, but it's all a part of the research process.

Government resources (most useful for nutrition/composition information)

Databases with Scholarly Articles (most useful for processing and packaging info)

TIP for searching in books!

When looking for information about your topic, look for the search function when you open the book! From there, you can search the book rather than skimming the whole text. You may not be able to find your specific food, so be creative! For example, if your food is fritos, you may try corn chips or corn snacks or processed corn to get at the section you're seeking.
