EndNote Online

EndNote Online is a Web-based reference organizer and collaboration tool that can be used alone or in combination with EndNote Desktop.

EndNote Online allows you to:

  • Collect, organize and edit references
  • Integrate in-text citations and create a formatted bibliography using their Cite While You Write add-on or plug-in in a variety of word processing software
  • Create groups and collaborate with other EndNote Online users

EndNote Online: Basic and Premium

The number of features available to you in EndNote Online will depend on how you have created and configured your EndNote Online account, and whether you have a licensed version of EndNote Desktop software.

EndNote Online Basic is a freely available cloud-based app to anyone. To create your EndNote Basic online account with added Web of Science features (available for Wayne State University affiliates), follow these steps:

1. Go to library.wayne.edu, and select Article Databases

2. Select W from the list, then select Web of Science

3. Select EndNote at the top of the Web of Science screen

4. Select Sign Up to create your personal account. You can also create your account with Facebook or LinkedIn.

Your account is created and you can begin using EndNote Basic Online

EndNote Online Premium is available to users who have a licensed version of EndNote desktop software and have connected their EndNote Online account to their EndNote desktop account via Sync.

To create your EndNote Online Premium account.

1. Open the EndNote program on your computer

2. Select  or from Tools-->Sync

3.  You will be prompted to either create a new EndNote Online account*, or login to your preexisting EndNote online account.

*This process not only creates your EndNote Online account with premium features, but also syncs your desktop and online libraries.

Syncing your EndNote online and EndNote desktop application provides free 2 year access to EndNote Premium Online. After you leave WSU, the Premium access will expire after the 2 year access (this timetable resets whenever you download an update to the EndNote Desktop), and your online account will revert EndNote Online Basic. Any references/file attachments that are already uploaded in EndNote Online will remain there, but syncing or adding references beyond the EndNote Basic limit of 50,000 references/2 GB of attachments will not be allowed.

Following is a table illustrating the differences between EndNote Online Basic and EndNote Online Premium.

If you would like to upgrade to EndNote Online Premium, you can purchase EndNote desktop application from Wayne State at a discount. Go to the Download EndNote section of this guide for more information on purchasing EndNote.
