Zoos and aquariums have been drawing visitors for thousands of years. The predecessor of the zoological garden is the menagerie which has a long history from the ancient world to modern times. The oldest known zoological collection was revealed during excavations at Hierakonpolis, Egypt in 2009, of a ca. 3500 B.C. menagerie. The exotic animals included hippos, hartebeest, elephants, baboons and wildcats.
In a survey conducted by the World Association of Zoos and Aquariums, in collaboration with national and regional zoo and aquarium associations, showed that annually more than 700 million people visit zoos and aquariums worldwide and are thus potentially exposed to environmental education. Furthermore, the world zoo and aquarium community reportedly spends about US$ 350 million on wildlife conservation each year.
AZA (Association of Zoos and Aquariums) zoos and aquariums represent the finest institutions in the country and are visited by more than 150 million people each year. That's more people than attended all professional baseball, basketball, football and hockey sporting events combined!!!!

- Smithsonian LibrariesA collection of pamphlets and guide books published by zoos over the past century has been collected by the National Zoological Park branch of the Smithsonian Institution Libraries. This online sample of these items, which includes maps, drawings and photographs of zoos from over 30 states and 40 countries is intended to highlight the value of this resource for both zoo and cultural historians. Few libraries or archives today contain materials showing the evolution of zoos in the modern era to the extent that this collection does.
- Berman Academy for Humane EducationThe Detroit Zoological Society traces its origins to a group of animals abandoned by a bankrupt circus in 1883. Citizens responded to by generously giving food and money to provide for their care. The Society was created on this foundation of helping animals in need. The naturalistic habitats that were developed demonstrate a desire to share the beauty of wild places and their inhabitants.
Over 100 years later, the Berman Academy for Humane Education was formed. A series of humane education initiatives were launched in 2002 and in 2005 the Academy settled into its permanent home in the Ford Education Center. The Academy offers a broad range of programs designed to meet the needs of our diverse audiences. Unique and engaging programs utilize a variety of instructional strategies – including traditional instruction, storytelling, role-playing, theater, and virtual technology – to match the various learning styles of the community. Through participation in formal and informal experiences, audiences understand the need to treat other living creatures with respect, responsibility, and compassion. The Berman Academy for Humane Education was created to help people help animals. - Zoo and Aquarium Sustainable PracticesAZA-accredited zoos and aquariums serve as conservation experts who are not only involved in assuring animal, habitat, and ecosystem survival, but also strive to conserve the natural resources utilized in their business operations. Sustainable practices are implemented to reduce water and energy usage, decrease waste generation as well as increase green purchasing protocols and renewable energy generation. AZA has developed several mechanisms, such as two volumes of AZA Green Guide, the Sustainable Practices Tool Box, the Green Award, and Smart Source Purchasing Programs to help AZA-accredited zoos and aquariums accomplish these practices.
