History of Medicine is this month's Subject of the Month. Broadly considered, history of medicine as an academic discipline covers not just the story of medical breakthroughs and medical practice throughout the centuries, but includes sets of questions about our selves, our bodies, our minds, the way we conceive of sickness and health, normalcy and abnormalcy, and the way historical actors, events, and ideas interact to produce stories about medicine and medical care. Changing interpretations of ideas and events from new theoretical perspectives make the history of medicine a vibrant, fascinating, interdisciplinary pursuit filled with strange stories, and provide new insights into our conceptions of sickness, health, and the current state of medical care delivery.
